사이먼 앤 가펑클(Simon & Garfunkel)은

미국의 2인조 음악 그룹으로 어린 시절 친구사이였으며,

1960년대에 큰 명성을 얻었습니다.

사이먼 & 가펑클이 1981년 진행했던 뉴욕 시 센트럴 파크에서의 무료 공연은

약 50만명의 관객을 동원하며 역사상 가장 큰 공연으로 기록되고 있습니다.

“The Sounds of Silence”의 첫 녹음 버전은

그들의 데뷔 앨범 ‘Wednesday Morning, 3 am’에 수록되었지만

이 앨범이 흥행에 대대적 실패를 거두자 2인조는 그룹을 해체되는 계기가 되었지만,

프로듀서 톰 윌슨이 이 트랙에 일렉트릭 기타, 베이스, 드럼을 넣어

새로운 버전을 발매하여 1965년 말무렵, 차트정상에 올라

사이먼 앤 가펑클의 넘버 원 히트 행진의 첫 곡이 되었습니다.

이 노래는 60년대 청춘의 소외감을 보여준

마이크 니콜스 감독이 연출을 맡은 더스틴 호프만을 주연의

성년이 되어가는 청춘을 그린

1967년의 영화 ‘졸업’의 사운드트랙으로 쓰이며

더욱 인기를 끌게 됩니다.
